Who is René Auberjonois?

René Auberjonois was an American actor and singer. He was best known for the role of Odo on the television series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. He also provided the voice for the character Louis in the 1989 Disney film The Little Mermaid.

Rene was born on 1 June 1940, in New York City, New York, USA. His nationality was American and he was of mixed ethnicity(Swiss-French, Russian, German, Italian).

His birth name was Rene Murat Auberjonois. His father, Fernand Auberjonois was a Cold War-era foreign correspondent and Pulitzer Prize-nominated writer.  His mother, Laure Louise Napoléone Eugénie Caroline Murat was a great-great-granddaughter of Joachim Murat. Auberjonois has a sister and a brother, and two half-sisters from his mother’s first marriage. His family moved to Paris, France after World War II. At an early age, René Auberjonois decided to become an actor. After a few years in France, his family moved back to the United States.

His school was in London. When he was in school, he was very active in music and arts. He attended the Carnegie-Mellon University, Institute of Technology, and graduated in 1962.

After college, Rene began his acting career at theaters.  During his early career days, he traveled between Los Angeles, California, and New York, working in numerous theater productions.

He helped found the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco, the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles, and the Brooklyn Academy of Music Repertory Company in New York.

In 1969, René Auberjonois appeared as Sebastian Baye in the theater production Coco, for which he earned a Tony Award for his performance.

He received Tony nominations for his roles in The Good Doctor in 1973. He first appeared in movies in 1970. His first movie role was as Father Mulcahy in M*A*S*H (1970).

Since then, he had roles in several hit movies including the gangster Tony in Police Academy 5: Assignment Miami Beach (1988), and Reverend Oliver in The Patriot (2000).

René Auberjonois had appeared in numerous TV productions as well. His television movie credits include The Rhinemann Exchange, The Dark Secret of Harvest Home, Disney’s Geppetto, Gore Vidal’s Billy The Kid, the remake of A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, and Sally Hemings: An American Scandal (2000) miniseries. He has also worked as a voice artist.
